THE WONDERETTES - I FEEL STRANGE

While this seems to be without a doubt a Detroit record, it's a mysterious one nonetheless. There are also some records on United Artists records billed as The Wonderettes (more than likely the same group) and one backing Detroit singer and producer Johnnie Mae Matthews (she also cut a 45 around this time billed as Johnnie Mae Matthews & The Wonderettes).

Anyhow, this is such a cool record, perhaps made even sexier for the fact that their history is shrouded in mystery.

Isn't it the same Johnnie Mae Matthews that worked with the Distants, who later became the Temptations?!? I have a copy of "Come On", and she's credited as a songwriter.

I have a Ruby Records pressing of this song.
My mom had the record (I still have it, and it still plays very well).

The recording was later released on United Artist Records. It's a real charged recording (and a solid B-side as well). Somewhat seductive for the day as well.

The Ruby Records pressing listed a publishing company called "Different Music". When released by United Artist, that company's music publishing division was listed as co-publisher, a common practice in the recorded music business.

A lot of the music that went through United Artist was reissued through Capitol-EMI. I don't know if this was. If some things aren't big sellers, they discontinue them or sell the masters to whoever will buy them or they lease them to a musical holding company. Many times those maybe foreign companies like Northern Soul.

They cut a few more recording for United Artist, then, like a lot of one hit wonders (and regional breakouts), just disappeared.
